I’m not here to add to that.

I want to talk about something different. Something I didn’t expect.

Thanks for reading! The gap between having an idea and actually building it used to be almost nothing. You just figured it out. Small teams, simple tools, your hands on everything.

Then specialization happened. Then org charts. Then you became a “leader” and the trade was scope for proximity. You gain one, you give up the other.

AI started closing that gap for me again. Not in a hype way... in a real, practical, I-can-actually-build-this-now way. I’ve gone from prototyping to building fully API integrated products and deploying them myself. Refining and rebuilding the engines behind my UX process too. Things I’d honestly just accepted as fixed. Taking ideas further than I ever could before without a full team around me.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why it feels different than other tools that came before it. I think it’s because it gives back something that experience quietly takes away. Not skill. Not judgment. Just that feeling of momentum. The early-career energy of being able to move fast and touch everything.

And look, I get the fear. AI is loud right now and a lot of that noise is genuinely unsettling. But I keep coming back to this: the designers who are going to struggle most aren’t the ones who haven’t learned the tools yet. They’re the ones who stopped being curious somewhere along the way.

AI can’t read your team. It can’t feel the politics in the room. It can’t know when to push and when to shut up. What it can do is help you move faster inside the process you know how to build. That’s the whole game right now... use what you know that it doesn’t, and go further than you could before.

There’s a version of this moment that’s scary. I understand that version.

But there’s another version where you look at what you can actually build now that you couldn’t a few years ago, and you just... get to work.

Thanks for reading! Not because I didn’t have opinions. I have plenty of those. But writing feels different than talking. Talking, I can read the room. I can adjust. Writing is just... out there. People get to decide what they think without me in the room to explain myself.

That’s a little scary for someone who spent the first half of his career as an introvert.

Thanks for reading! You know it’s you, but it sounds strange, and suddenly you’re convinced everyone else can tell. The weird part is, that’s all they’ve heard this whole time... and it seems to be going ok. Maybe I’m just my own worst critic.

I’ve been in design for 20 years. Agency, in-house, consulting. I’ve worked all three sides. Led teams, built design systems, run UX practices, won some awards I’m proud of and a few I’m less sure about. And somehow, even with all of that, there’s still a voice that asks: who are you to write about this?

I think a lot of people in this industry feel that. So much energy goes into making the work speak for itself that it’s easy to forget you’re allowed to speak too.

So here’s what this is. I’m using a window I have right now to finally write things I’ve been meaning to say. About design, about leading creative teams, about what the job actually looks like from inside it. Not the polished case study version, but the real one. The one where you’re figuring things out and second-guessing yourself and occasionally getting it right.

That’s the version I want to write about, and honestly it’s the version I’d actually want to read. I’d rather be the person you can trust than the smartest one in the room.

If that sounds like something worth reading, stick around.

Thanks for reading!
